Penrith Divers have been going diving and teaching every level of recreational diver for nearly 50 years. Our members come from all areas of East Cumbria, from Armathwaite to Orton, Greystoke to Alston.
Our friendly and knowledgeable club will support you whether you want to try snorkelling, take a beginner’s SCUBA course, develop your skills or just continue diving. We believe in teaching people to dive safely so that they can deal with underwater situations confidently and we are proud of our safety record.
Our main dive sites are the Lakes and Capernwray, but we also do regular sea dives at sites such as St Abbs or Loch Long. Our annual summer dive trip allows us to swap dry suits for wetsuits in warmer waters like Malta, Lanzarote or Sharm el Sheikh. As we have around 20 members of all ages (from 11 to 73) and from all walks of life, we try and keep our diving activities varied. So we look at wrecks, reefs and sandbanks, hunt for lost items and basically just like getting underwater when and where we can.
We dive under Sub-Aqua Association regulations and follow their detailed training programme. So you can start from scratch with a try-dive in the safe environment of Penrith Pool or, if you are coming to us with a qualification from another organisation like PADI or BSAC, we can transfer you across to the appropriate level. The pool is also a good place to practice the techniques you need for your next diving qualification and our 6 supportive instructors will help you progress at a speed that’s right for you. In addition to practical diving sessions we have bimonthly theory training sessions for all members, regardless of level, at Newbiggin Village Hall. We are a friendly group so, as well as heading off underwater, we also hold social events in the summer and around Christmas to get to know non-diving family members better.
Whether you’ve done your PADI course and are keen to extend your skills or are an experienced drysuit diver who’s just moved into the area or it’s just that you’ve found yourself entranced by Blue Planet and want to find out what it’s all about – why not come and see us? You can find us most Sundays at Penrith Pool from 9 to 10am or join us for a coffee at our club meetings at a local cafe from 10 – 11 where we discuss all things dive related. Often there’s a dive straight afterwards in Ullswater. If you’re interested just come down and see us or send a message here.
